Bringing Your Dream Home to Life

What is your ‘dream home’? What does it look like? What style accents does it have? What practical additions do you imagine in it? What layout suits you?

Chances are that you have already thought of the answers to a lot of these questions, and other similar ones.

But putting all of the jigsaw pieces together to design a home that will suit you today and as you and your family change over the years is a much bigger task (and one that even professional designers and builders struggle with!).

So to help you cut through the noise and to help you understand the framework you should think about when coming up with your dream home when working with a custom home builder in Sydney, we’ve put together the following tips based on our experience working with clients from across New South Wales including Greater Sydney and Western Sydney.

Go timeless, not today’s trends

You know when you see a home that is very clearly from a specific point in time and say something like: ‘wow that place is straight out of the 70’s’ or ‘that’s a classic 1950’s Sydney house’?

That’s something you probably want to avoid for your own home 20 years from now.

A custom home should be timeless and adaptable as your family moves through different stages of life.

Create a starring team not a team of ‘star players’

This tip is all about making sure all of your pieces and choices work together. When you’re collecting inspiration for your custom home build or long-dreamed about home renovation or extension it’s natural to get excited and bookmark every clever storage idea and design trend.

But that’s the ‘star players’ approach. They might all be good on their own, but put them all together and chances are you’re going to have a slightly confused, slightly chaotic result.

We are big fans of the ‘starring team’ approach. That begins with picking a style guide that’s consistent to work from as your base. That guide helps to narrow your choices down into a set of options that work well together and that complement each other, not compete with each other.

Leave space for change

Maybe you have no pets right now. Perhaps you’ve got one child at the moment, and no plans for more. It might be the case that your parents are totally independent.

These things are all factors in what your home will need today. But they are also things that might change in an instant. You might adopt a pet from a family member who is moving overseas on short notice. A surprise might arrive in the form of a new baby on the way. Your parents needs might change, and you might want them closer to home.

Leaving space for changes to your current circumstances is something we advocate for to all clients who are interested in working with home extension builders in Sydney like us.

That might mean leaving space in the yard for a detached granny flat, or adding an extra room in the home that will be ‘spare’ at the moment, but that could be swapped into an extra bedroom down the track.
